In de Verenigde Staten is een wetsvoorstel voorgesteld welke in de toekomst wel eens buitengewone gevolgen kan hebben voor de computerwereld. Het wetsvoorstel is er voornamelijk ter bescherming van het copyright van visuele media‚ aangezien het gebaseerd is op een voorstel van Disney studio’s. Maar het voorstel is zo uitgebreid dat het iedere programmeur en elektronicafabrikant raakt. Kern van het voorstel is dat elk medium dat gebruikt wordt voor verspreiding van software‚ een door de regering goedgekeurd beveiligingsysteem moet bevatten. Onder software wordt alles verstaan zoals een gewone applicatie als Windows MediaPlayer maar ook een O.S. als UNIX en zelfs embedded software in pda’s en mobiele telefoons valt onder het begrip software. Hierdoor moet het beveiligingsysteem daarom wel onderdeel zijn van het medium. Daarnaast mag een programmeur zijn code niet meer uitvoeren buiten Amerika‚ voordat het goedgekeurd is door de federale overheid.

All the BSDs are undergoing constant and vigorous development. Since the BSDs frequently share code among one another‚ innovations frequently benefit more than just one camp. FreeBSD recently published its development road map‚ showing version 4.6′s planned release in June. NetBSD is moving toward the release of version 1.6 as well‚ though no ship date has been set. By tradition‚ OpenBSD is on a biannual release schedule. Version 2.9 was released on June 1 of last year‚ with 3.0 following on December 1. OpenBSD 3.1 is expected around June 1 of this year.

If you’re investigating and evaluating Unix-style OSes‚ don’t pick Linux just because of the buzz. Take a good look at FreeBSD‚ NetBSD‚ and OpenBSD as well‚ and make the most informed decision.

Brain has identified the flaw in all versions of Mandrake Linux before version 8.1 and all versions of Sun Solaris. Brain believes other Unix operating systems could also be affected.
