Liberty voert gesprekken om Casema over te nemen. Bij een eventuele aankoop ontstaat met UPC en Casema een ongekend kabelbolwerk.

Zowel Casema als UPC zijn in Nederland behalve met tv ook actief met breedband internet. Met in totaal ruim 3,3 miljoen aansluitingen in Nederland zouden de twee concerns samen een groot deel van de markt in handen hebben. UPC is momenteel de nummer één (2,1 miljoen aansluitingen), gevolgd door Essent (1,6 miljoen) en Casema (1,2 miljoen). Andere bedrijven spelen nauwelijks een rol van betekenis.

Op de FreeBSD mailling list kwam een mailtje met de vraag wat er nu allemaal nieuw was in FreeBSD 5.0.
Daar kwam natuurlijk een heel mooi antwoord op wat je hier kunt vinden.
Een van de belangrijkste verbeteringen is toch wel de SMP support.

FreeBSD -current base system zal standaard niet langer Perl bevatten omdat dit niet meer nodig is. Het zal daarom vanuit de ports geinstalleerd kunnen worden.

Mark Murray put out a call to the -current mailing list asking for volunteers to port all Perl scripts in the base system to another language‚ such as sh or C. All critical programs are already being ported‚ with only a few minor ones left to be claimed/

Microsoft heeft in Maart een document vrijgegeven over hoe CIFS (Common Internet File Sharing) werkt. Dit betekent voor veel programmeurs‚ die CIFS willen gebruiken‚ dat ze dit makkelijker kunnen implementeren. Maar het artikel bevat een belangrijke beperking waardoor juist veel programmeurs niks meer kunnen doen.

“In brief‚ it sucks‚” said Jeremy Allison‚ a leader of the Samba project. He called Microsoft’s agreement “a direct attack” on Samba and the GPL.

It is unclear whether Microsoft would take legal action against programmers who reviewed the document and used the information in GPL-governed code, though the implied threat is enough to cause concern.

Jason R. Thorpe heeft recentelijk wat experiementele code toegevoegt aan de NetBSD-Current die ervoor zorgt dat er zero-copy mogelijk is voor TCP en UDP aan de transmissie kant. Deze veranderingen zouden voor ernorme verbeteringen kunnen zorgen voor FTP‚ WW en Samba servers. Je kan Jason’s announcement hier lezen voor meer details.

Op tests met embedded systemen met gelimiteerde memory‚ ging de preformence van ~6500KB/s naar 11100KB/s over een 100baseTX-FDX btw.

It’s also worth noting that a server application that mmap’s a file and then sends it out to the network causes the data to be moved exactly once: from disk to memory. The rest of the “data movement” is done by VM mappings and reference counting tricks. This could mean significant performance improvements for FTP‚ WWW‚ and Samba servers (NFS servers can’t take advantage of this yet; they use a different interface‚ which I am going to address separately fairly soon).

My objective is to turn a pile of old corporate Pentium class workstations into a mini super-computer before my boss has them donated to charity. I consider that charity a waste of perfectly good cluster nodes! Waste not, want not?. So the race is on to get my cluster project moving forward.
